How to tell it
A plant wholly covered in dense white felt mixed with glandular hairs that make it sticky to touch, which gives the scientific name. Elongated leaves with a wavy or shallowly cut edge. Pale yellow heads in groups at the top, the bracts visibly woolly. Range: endemic to Madeira.
What it is confused with
White andryala
Andryala ragusina
They are very alike and both white with wool. The mainland one lives in gravel beds and dry riverbeds; this is Madeiran and clearly sticky to touch. Neither is dangerous.
